Associate contracts in England and Wales

Advice on the considerations for associates when agreeing to provide NHS services on behalf of a practice.

Overview

As a self-employed dentist working in a practice owned by another dentist or a dental company, your role comes with both independence and responsibility. When practice owners and associates work cooperatively, the arrangement can benefit everyone; patients receive quality care, associates can grow professionally and both parties are fairly rewarded for their work.

Self-employment offers flexibility and autonomy. While the practice owner provides the facilities and support services, you retain control over your clinical decisions and take full responsibility for the care you provide.

To support a successful working relationship, it is important to have a written agreement that clearly sets out the rights, responsibilities, and commercial interests of both parties. This not only helps avoid misunderstandings but also supports your self-employed status.

We offer two types of associate agreement templates: traditional and worker. We recommend exploring the clauses using our online learning tool to understand how they apply to your working arrangements.

We also offer a contract review service, through which you can request a review of any prospective associate agreement with a view to better understanding the proposed terms before signing.

If you have been offered an associate position with {my}dentist, you can access our review of their standard contract, which has been agreed with {my}dentist.
