Criminal record checks

Each nation has a specific process to follow to confirm that team members have undergone criminal record checks and are safe to work with patients.

Overview

Dental practices must ensure that all staff working with children or adults at risk have appropriate criminal record checks. For NHS-contracted dentists, checks are typically completed as part of Performers List registration. If relying on these, practices must obtain written assurance from NHS England and carry out a risk assessment.

All dentists and dental care professionals (DCPs) should have:

  • A valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (or equivalent in Scotland/Northern Ireland)
  • A check against the barred lists where applicable.

It is important to note that DBS checks are valid only at the time of issue.
