Overview
Dental practices must ensure that all staff working with children or adults at risk have appropriate criminal record checks. For NHS-contracted dentists, checks are typically completed as part of Performers List registration. If relying on these, practices must obtain written assurance from NHS England and carry out a risk assessment.
All dentists and dental care professionals (DCPs) should have:
- A valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (or equivalent in Scotland/Northern Ireland)
- A check against the barred lists where applicable.
It is important to note that DBS checks are valid only at the time of issue.
