Criminal record checks

Each nation has a specific process to follow to confirm that team members have undergone criminal record checks and are safe to work with patients.

Overview

Dental practices must ensure that all staff working with children or adults at risk have appropriate criminal record checks.

In England and Wales, checks are carried out by the DBS; in Scotland the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG); and in Northern Ireland by AccessNI. For non-clinical staff not eligible for enhanced checks, standard disclosures may be appropriate, depending on their job role. For more information on which roles are eligible, see the guidance on DBS eligibility.
