Life-long learning

Being a dentist means committing to continual professional development. As the profession is regulated, there are certain core CPD topics the GDC recommends that dental professionals focus on as part of their personal development plans.

Now all dentist members can access these courses.

Core CPD on-demand: Learning whenever you want

You get 26 hours of ‘core’ or GDC-recommended CPD pulled together in one centralised, inter-linked course hub that you can earn whenever you are ready. Add this to the 70 hours of CPD available through the BDJ Portfolio and you’re well on your way to meeting your commitments for learning.

As a BDA member, you already have access to this resource, so head over to the CPD Hub where you can plan, complete and track your courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Core CPD modules cover GDC-recommended, patient-safety-critical topics such as medical emergencies, radiography, decontamination, safeguarding and legal/ethical issues. They are verifiable, quality-assured and auditable, making them essential for compliance. Other CPD may be elective, non-verifiable, or focused on specialist skills.

Dentists should refresh all core CPD topics within each five-year cycle. Medical emergencies must be updated annually, with at least two hours each year. Radiography, decontamination and safeguarding should also be reviewed regularly to keep knowledge current and maintain patient safety standards.

Select courses that are verifiable, aligned with GDC guidance and relevant to your clinical role. Look for quality-assured providers with clear learning outcomes. BDA Core CPD offers evidence-based modules that cover all recommended topics and automatically record your verifiable CPD hours

Keep certificates showing your name, topic, date, learning outcomes, hours and provider details. Maintain a personal development plan (PDP) and spread hours evenly across the cycle. This ensures you can quickly demonstrate compliance and avoid stress if the GDC requests an audit.

Yes. In March 2025, the GDC simplified CPD certificate requirements (registration numbers no longer required, electronic confirmations accepted), relaxed signature rules, and clarified guidance on grace periods and restoration. Core CPD topics and hour requirements remain unchanged for dentists.
