A message from the Northern Ireland Branch President for 2025

A look back at the last five years, and hope for the remaining half of this decade.

It seems only a blink since 2020 arrived. So much has happened in the last five years - unfortunately not much of it to the benefit of our profession. Following the devastation of the pandemic, there was the cost of living and inflation crisis, and then in 2024 the amalgam phase-out bombshell which thankfully has been averted for a period. This was achieved through the hard work of our BDA staff and committee chairs.

Most dentists are adaptable and resilient. Along with a commitment to their patients, most seem to have navigated these unprecedented waters to date. These challenges and the changing needs of our members, especially younger colleagues, are still very real. While engaging with government when possible to secure an NHS service that is fit for purpose, we must also help those who wish to increase their private practice.

Half time in any sport is a period for reflection and changes, so let’s hope the second half of this decade leads to a much brighter future for all.

When accepting this role my main concern was how I would get a lecture programme delivered. I need not have been concerned as after careful thought, I ended up with more speakers than lecture event slots! Everyone I asked readily accepted and I hope the varied programme will appeal to dentists working in all areas of the profession.

Following on from the success of Riddell Hall during 2024 I have continued with this venue, except for the February meeting which is in the Great Hall in Queen’s University Lanyon Building.

We have planned some excellent learning events and a social programme for the year alongside the regular golfing events. These events are beneficial for chatting to colleagues in a more relaxed setting where you will discover we all have similar aspirations and worries. In order to encourage attendance, we have kept prices for “plus ones” the same as for BDA members. I would also like to see some families attend our North Coast walk and meal. In the autumn the gala ball will return.

As Benevolent Fund trustee I would like to ask everyone to generously support any of our fund-raising activities. The Fund receives numerous applicants from Northern Ireland each year and it is vital that we remember colleagues who fall on hard times.

During the year of president-elect it has become even more apparent the role is only made possible by the hard work of others. My thanks are due to the BDA Branch Council Officers and the BDA Northern Ireland Office for all their efforts in the background to ensure you receive all the information about events.

I also thank our generous sponsors (two of whom are new this year) for their continued support which brings many added benefits to the Branch. I hope the Branch continues to go from strength to strength and that more members, especially younger ones, will get involved in the various activities. I look forward to seeing you all in 2025.
