New editors take the reins at the BDJ

Renowned dentists set out to elevate the portfolio’s influence on dental research, practice, and policy.

The British Dental Journal (BDJ) is entering a new chapter as it welcomes two distinguished professionals to lead its editorial team. Professor Avijit Banerjee and Professor Philip Preshaw bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and passion to their respective roles, marking the beginning of a promising future for the journal.

Professor Banerjee, as editor-in-chief, will strategically oversee the complete BDJ Portfolio, which encompasses six journals and magazines. With a stellar academic and clinical career, he is renowned for his contributions to cariology, restorative dentistry, minimum intervention oral healthcare, and minimally invasive dentistry. His strategic priorities include increasing the national and international profile of the portfolio, expanding readership, and maintaining the highest standards of quality, relevance, and impact.

Professor Preshaw steps into the role of editor for the flagship BDJ. A specialist in periodontics, he is currently Dean of Dentistry and Professor of Periodontology at the University of Dundee. His research delves into the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and its links to systemic conditions such as diabetes. With a career marked by academic excellence and clinical insight, Professor Preshaw is poised to steer the BDJ to new heights.

Supporting policy and practice

Recognising the rapidly evolving landscape of oral and dental healthcare, Professor Banerjee intends for the BDJ Portfolio to play a vital role in influencing policy and practice guidelines. He emphasises the importance of providing up-to-date, agile information to support the profession amid changing political and clinical environments, both in the United Kingdom and internationally. The portfolio will continue to feature expert perspectives, clinical guidelines, and reviews to inform decision making across the profession.

Surpassing readership expectations

Understanding the evolving needs and interests of the readership is a top priority. One of the first initiatives will be a comprehensive readership survey to gain insight into the preferences and expectations of the BDJ audience. Enhanced online resources and alignment with the BDA’s digital platforms will provide timely, accessible information for the wider oral healthcare team.
