Northern Ireland: Health Minister considering response to pay review decision

In response to the UK Government's recent announcement to fully accept the recommendations of the pay review bodies, including the 52nd DDRB Report, we look to the NI Executive to move quickly to apply an above-inflation uplift.

The decision, which currently applies to England alone, leaves the Northern Ireland Executive deliberating its stance on mirroring these adjustments within its own healthcare sector.

The DDRB's latest report recommends a 6% pay uplift for dental contracts and salary scales of salaried dentists, alongside a 6% rise plus a consolidated uplift of £1000 for doctors and dentists in training.

Welcoming the publication of these recommendations, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has expressed preliminary support for the proposals. However, he has emphasised the need to assess the financial implications for Northern Ireland and secure additional funding necessary for implementation.

Acknowledging the fiscal challenges facing health and social care in Northern Ireland, Minister Nesbitt said: “The severe budgetary pressures on health and social care in NI mean I am unable to make an immediate decision on the recommendations. This is very regrettable, but I can assure staff I will do everything in my power to ensure they are properly rewarded for the great work they do."

The extreme delay in payment of 23/24 uplifts was unacceptable. As colleagues in England now have the certainty of their pay increase, likewise we will be pushing for an early decision for colleagues in Northern Ireland.

We will keep you updated of any further progress on this important issue.
